Werder Bremen used two late goals by Tim Borowski and Hugo Almeida for a 2-0 victory over Austria Vienna to book their place in the Europa League Round of 32 and extend their undefeated streak to 18 games.

Against the guests from Austria, Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf had to replace injured Claudio Pizarro and Torsten Fringen with Tim Borowski and Peter Niemeyer starting in their places while Petri Pasanen started in favour of Sebastian Boenisch. Werder were determined in the early going against Vienna in front of 25,000 fans at Weser Stadium. But they lacked the firepower offensively without Pizarro. The Austrians meanwhile were much more dangerous up front and only a superb Tim Wiese kept Vienna from scoring in the first 45 minutes. And it was thanks to Wiese’s excellent stops that Werder went into the break even at 0-0.

Thomas Schaaf reacted to his team’s weak offensive showing and brought in Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida for Philipp Bargfrede after intermission. But the Austrians still had the better chances early in the second half with Wiese stopping Jacek Bak (47’), Milenko Acimovic (52’) and Zlatko Junuzovic (58’). At the other end, Werder had chances through Almeida and Markus Rosenberg in the 64th minute but the Austrian keeper stopped Almeida’s attempt and Rosenberg could not hit home the rebound.

Schaaf’s team were better after that and finally scored with nine minutes left as Tim Borowski made it 1-0. Mesut Özil fed Rosenberg, who headed onto Borowski for a header past the Vienna keeper. And Almeida decided the game just three minutes later, striking home Aaron Hunt’s assist for the 2-0 final score line. That finished off the guests, who were the better team over long stretches. And the victory secured Werder a spot in the Round of 32.
