After a five-game winless streak, Athletic Bilbao finally collected a victory on the ninth game day, beating Champions League side Atletico Madrid 1-0 on a goal by Javi Martinez. The three points helped Athletic stabilise themselves in ninth place in the standings.

Austria Vienna meanwhile suffered a setback as the Austrian club had a disappointing showing against city rivals Neustadt and lost 4-3 at home. The loss meant that Austria had to hand over the lead in the Bundesliga and dropped all the way to fourth place.

And Nacional Funchal booked an important come-from-behind victory at home against second-to-last Vitoria Setubal in Portugal. Werder's third Europa League group opponents fell behind early but ended up winning 2-1. The win kept Nacional Funchal (fifth place, 14 points) in the second Europa League spot on the table.
