Werder Bremen fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half to secure a 2-2 draw and at least one point in Nuremberg. Christian Eigler (3’) and Albert Bunjaku (33’) gave Nuremberg a 2-0 lead before Aaron Hunt scored in the 72nd and 90th minutes.
Werder Bremen were forced to play in Nuremberg without the striking quartet Claudio Pizarro, Hugo Almeida, Marcelo Moreno and Torsten Oehrl, with Markus Rosenburg starting as the sole attacker. And the promoted side shocked Werder in the third minute with Christian Eigler’s goal. Neither Per Mertesacker nor Naldo went up for a long high ball and Eigler was able to push the shot home after a charging Tim Wiese raced by the ball. Thomas Schaaf’s team was far from their normal form and could not shake themselves out of the shock. And the hosts doubled the lead in the 33rd minute. A corner from Maik Frantz was headed home by Albert Bunjaku as Wiese had no chance. And Nuremberg led 2-0 at intermission.
Nuremberg began the second half compact defensively and had luck as Naldo’s header struck the crossbar in the 51st minute. Wiese made a fine save against Marek Mintal at the other end, and Schaaf’s team finally woke up. Hunt pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute, heading in Sebastian Boenisch’s cross to make it 2-1. And Hunt was again on target just seconds before the final whistle. The Nuremberg defence failed to clear a ball and Hunt blasted into the upper left corner for the deserved 2-2 draw.
