Defending champions Werder Bremen advanced to the quarterfinals of the German Cup by beating second division side Kaiserslautern without any serious problems 3-0. Petri Pasanen (27’), Tim Borowski (38’) and Torsten Oehrl (75’) scored the goals for Thomas Schaaf’s team.
Schaaf was forced to face off against Kaiserslautern without injured top striker Claudio Pizarro, who was replaced by Marcelo Moreno in the starting lineup. And as expected, Werder took over the game early in front of 26,094 spectators at Weser Stadium and was the better team. Still, Bremen needed 27 minutes before taking the lead 1-0. Petri Pasanen stood perfectly to head home after Marko Marin’s shot was stopped. And Tim Borowski extended the lead just nine minutes later to 2-0, heading home a cross by Aaron Hunt. And that was the half-time score as well.
In the second half, Schaaf’s men did only the absolute necessary against the harmless second division side. Therefore Werder fans had to wait until the 67th minute for another good scoring chance through Borowski. And then Torsten Oehrl finished the scoring in the 75th minute with a header to make it 3-0. And that ended all doubts against Kaiserslautern and paved the way for the defending champions ticket for the quarterfinals.
