Defending champions Werder Bremen will have to reach the quarterfinals of the German Cup without striker Claudio Pizarro. The striker was complaining about ankle pain after the victory Sunday in Bochum and received treatment. "It’s a bruise and compression in the ankle. He has problems walking normally. Therefore nominating him would not make any sense," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf ahead of the Round of 16 showdown with Kaiserslautern.
The Werder coach would not say who will be replacing the team’s most dangerous striker. But there are plenty of options for Schaaf. Besides the likes of Moreno, Rosenberg, Oehrl, Hunt and Marin, also included on the squad is the young Bosnian Said Husejinovic. "I think that he can be called upon. He has worked hard the whole time. And now he must continue to complete his tasks. Whether or not we want to bring him a step further on Wednesday remains to be seen," said Schaaf.
Marcelo Moreno and Markus Rosenberg also have not yet received promises of playing despite Pizarro being out. "I don’t know yet who will be in attack tomorrow. Both can play better than they have shown until now. For them, they have to demonstrate their qualities," added the coach.
Werder Bremen will have the following 18-man squad available for their German Cup Round of 16 match: Wiese, Vander, Pasanen, Naldo, Fritz, Mertesacker, Marin, Özil, Borowski, Hunt, Frings, Niemeyer, Moreno, Rosenberg, Bargfrede, Boenisch, Husejinovic, Oehrl.
