Bochum shocked Werder after just 38 seconds in front of 25,703 spectators, taking the lead as Mimoun Azauoagh played a fine pass to Stanislav Sestak, who left Bremen keeper Tim Wiese without a chance. In the ninth minute, Hunt came up with the somewhat surprising equaliser. An Özil corner was headed on by Claudio Pizarro to Hunt, who hit home from two yards out. Despite evening the game, Bremen struggled to gain control of the match. It finally came in the 31st minute. Marin played into the area to Hunt, who passed back to the 20-year-old Marin to score his first Bundesliga goal for Bremen. Despite the turbulent action, Werder took the 2-1 lead into the break.

Bochum were not as strong in the second half and Bremen gained control of the proceedings. Hunt was a bit unlucky after 53 minutes as Bochum’s keeper made a fine save. And Tim Wiese was superb with his stops of Azauoagh’s attempt in the 66th minute and Sestak with 15 minutes left.
