Werder Bremen departed Wednesday morning for their Europa League away game at Vienna in a relaxed mood knowing they already have six points from the first two games. It was clear to see at Bremen airport that the Green-Whites know they are in a good spot but also that a special atmosphere awaits them in the Austrian metropolis. "Games between German and Austrian teams always have a special rivalry. Austrians nearly always rise above themselves when they face German teams. But we are well prepared," said Werder manager Klaus Allofs before the departure. "Our goal is to travel there relaxed and without too much tension while still being fully concentrated when the opening whistle blows," added Allofs.
Tough crowd
Franz Horr Stadium, where the Austria Vienna-Werder showdown will be played on Thursday at 7 p.m., holds "only" 11,000 spectators for international matches. But they will make for a tough crowd, according to Allofs. Left defender Sebastian Boenisch was optimistic before leaving for Austria. "On paper, we are the favourites, even though Austria Vienna will not be an easy opponent. But I am certain that we will be just as concentrated as we have been in our recent games. And then we will also win the game," said Boenisch.
Concentrated showing
But head coach Thomas Schaaf did not want to think about whether Werder can plan for the next round with a victory in Vienna. "We are not thinking about that. We are only concentrating on the game in Vienna. But of course we know things look good with a victory," said Schaaf. Werder however will not take the game lightly and want to offer a concentrated showing.
