The fifth season has started in Bremen and it started with a much-desired Werder victory. But before the Green-Whites could head out for their traditional visit to the Freimarkt folk festival, Werder needed a tough 90 minutes against Hoffenheim to earn a 2-0 victory.
"After the Hoffenheim penalty, we woke up and played well until half-time," said captain Torsten Frings. Head coach Thomas Schaaf added: "We needed a certain amount of time to get into the game and the penalty was the starting point. After that we got rolling and were surer of ourselves after the two goals. All told, I saw a very good game from my team in which we did not give up very much defensively. And when things got tight, there was always someone there to clear it up."
One of those players was Per Mertesacker, who was also very satisfied. "I think we did a good job stopping the deadly passes of Carlos Eduardo. We wanted to make sure that we keep on course," said Mertesacker, who added: "In the past few years our defence hasn’t exactly been brilliant." Left back Sebastian Boenisch was also pleased with the team’s showing. "It was a good performance from us and now we deserve a trip to Freimarkt. As opposed to last season, we are playing more united as team," said Boenisch. And Werder’s unity could be seen twice on this game day, first on the pitch and then at the Freimarkt …
