Werder Bremen's Scandinavians both played briefly in their World Cup qualifiers. And while one had plenty of reason to celebrate, the other saw his dream of South Africa 2010 burst.
Jensen plays 30 minutes
Daniel Jensen celebrated his comeback after more than half a year away by playing for the Danish national team in their final World Cup qualifier. The Danes had already booked their spot for the World Cup ahead of their game against Hungary, in which the 30-year-old Jensen came on after an hour for Jon Dahl Tomasson. But Jensen could not keep Denmark from losing 1-0. Markus Rosenberg meanwhile was subbed in after 77 minutes of Sweden's 4-1 victory over Albania. But the big win was not enough to qualify for the Play-Offs and the final chance to reach the World Cup.
Naldo forced to watch, Moreno gains experience
Marcelo Moreno Martins lost his qualification game with Bolivia 1-0 in Peru. Moreno played all 90 minutes but did not score though his seven goals during the qualifying campaign ranked him fifth-best in South America. Brazilian centre back Naldo meanwhile once again was forced to watch the entire game from the bench just like four days earlier. The game against Venezuela ended 0-0 as Brazil finished the South America qualifying group in first place with 34 points. The Brazilians remain the only nation to play at all of the World Cup tournaments.
