In their final 2010 World Cup qualification game, Germany and Finland played to a 1-1 draw in Hamburg. Werder midfielder Mesut Özil was subbed in after halftime while his teammates Marko Marin and Tim Wiese did not play in the match. The fourth Green-White among the German ranks, Per Mertesacker, watched the game from the stands as discussed with German national team coach Joachim Löw.
The game was disappointing from a German point of view as Löw's team could not play up to their potential over the 90 minutes, falling behind 1-0 on Jonatan Johansson's goal in the 11th minute. Just seconds before the final whistle, Lukas Podolski scored the 1-1 equaliser.
