The German national team booked their ticket to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa by beating Russia 1-0 in Moscow. Two Werder Bremen players had a key role in the victory. Werder midfielder Mesut Özil set up the only goal of the game in the 34th minute for Miroslav Klose before being subbed out after 72 minutes for Arne Friedrich. And Bremen defender Per Mertesacker played the entire game and had a strong showing in the German backline. The other Werder players Tim Wiese and Marko Marin did not play in the game.
“I was convinced before the game that the team would have the necessary concentration and that is exactly what happened. Everybody showed the desire to win,” said German national team coach Joachim Löw after the game.
The German national team improved to 25 points in the World Cup qualification Group 4 standings to clinch first place. Germany have one more qualifier on Wednesday against Finland (6 p.m. live on ARD) in Hamburg. Russia remained on 21 points and must go through the Play-Offs to reach the 2010 World Cup.
