Werder Bremen youth talents Sebastian Mielitz and Tobias Kempe and the German U20 national team reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Egypt with a 3-2 victory over Nigeria in Suez.

Werder's U23 keeper Mielitz had to take the bench though as head coach Horst Hrubesch put English league professional Ron-Robert Zieler between the posts. Kempe meanwhile played a fine match until referee Jorge Larrionda was controversially sent off with a red card in the 64th minute. Despite playing a man down, the German U20s won the game 3-2 on Björn Kopplin's goal in injury time.
