Hugo Almeida had a setback as his return to team training after an operation of his appendectomy scar will be delayed. Torsten Frings and Philipp Bargfrede were also missing from the pitch for Werder's practice on Thursday. "We realised that he could not take part in certain exercises," said head coach Thomas Schaaf about the situation with his striker Almeida. The 25-year-old had to go back under the knife after experiencing pain because of a stitch in the abdominal wall, and the stitch was taken out. As a result, Almeida needed to be stitched back up and the stitches will be pulled in the coming weeks. And that means the Portuguese striker and the coach have to be patient. "I cannot say at the moment when he will return to training," said Schaaf.

Philipp Bargfrede meanwhile could only train on the bike Thursday due to irritation of his left knee patella tendon. "I hope that we can get this under control and I can get back to team training next week," said the midfielder. The same goes for captain Torsten Frings, who will be rested on Friday with a bruised foot. Tim Borowski (back problem) and Sebastian Prödl (rehab from knee surgery) completed individual training workouts on Thursday. The final training session of the national team game week will take place on Friday, 8 October 10 at 10 a.m. Coach Schaaf has given his players the weekend off.
