When head coach Thomas Schaaf called his players to training for the first time this week on Tuesday, 6 October 2009, he had to make due with a decimated squad. All told, nine Green-Whites were under way since the beginning of the week on national team duty.
While German internationals Per Mertesacker, Marko Marin, Mesut Özil and Tim Wiese were preparing for up-coming World Cup qualifier against Russia in Moscow, Philipp Bargfrede could not travel as planned to Nuremberg with the German U21 team. "Philipp is suffering with something he has been battling for some time now. It is nothing new. With Philpp it’s a question of stress. We have to see to it now that we reduce his program a bit. He already received treatment today from the team doctor. And the break will definitely do him good," said Schaaf about Bargfrede’s injury absence with the U21s.
Besides those on national team trips and long-time injured Sebastian Prödl and Hugo Almeida, still missing from Tuesday’s team training were the injured Tim Borowski (back problems) and Sebastian Boenisch (bruised thigh). But coach Schaaf said Boenisch should be returning soon. "Sebastian will probably be back training with the team tomorrow," said the coach, who would not say when Borowski would be able to return.
