Werder Bremen had a successful home premiere in the Europa League thanks to a strong first half, which brought them to a 3-1 (2-0) victory over the supposed strongest opponents of the group Athletic Bilbao. "I am very satisfied with the result. The first half was really good. Unfortunately we failed to finish off the game just before the break with Mesut's chance. That left us in unnecessary trouble after the sending off in the middle of the second half," said the visually satisfied manager Klaus Allofs about the hectic final stages of the game.

Schaaf: "Passed well"

Head coach Thomas Schaaf was also very satisfied with his team's showing, saying: "We passed well today. And most of the things we wanted to do we accomplished." Midfielder Philipp Bargfrede was especially pleased with his team's first half. "We really played a strong first half, let the ball roll very well and showed the fans some nice passing. We all get along very well on the pitch and off it as well," said Bargfrede. "Bilbao is probably the strongest opponent in the group so we can be happy about the three points today. We are in good form right now because we are very concentrated both in training and in the game. And we do not underestimate opponents any more and always prepare very well," said Naldo, who scored the 2-0 goal after a fine assist by Claudio Pizarro.
