Werder Bremen will be without Sebastian Boenisch and Tim Borowski for their Europa League game against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, 1 October 2009. Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made the announcement at the final press conference at Weser Stadium. Boenisch is labouring under a left thigh problem while Borowski has succumbed to lingering back pain.

Things look better, however, for Torsten Frings. Werder's 32-year-old captain had to break off early Wednesday afternoon's final training with a foot issue, but he will lace them up against Bilbao. "I took a hit in a normal challenge. It got a bit swollen. But I don't think it's too bad," said the midfielder, who assumes he will play in the second game of the Europa League Group L.

Per Mertesacker meanwhile received a cut over his eye on Tuesday but was able to return to training without a problem. "I have experienced quite a bit in my career. That will not hinder me," said the German international defender about his chances of playing against the Basque club.

Also in the roster for the game against the sixth-placed team in the Spanish Primera División will be Petri Pasanen, who did not take part in team training on Wednesday though he did go through running drills with Hugo Almeida, who will not play against Bilbao. "Petri feels a bit weak. We didn't want to take any risks," Schaaf described the "precautionary measure".

The following players are nominated for the Europa League game: Tim Wiese, Christian Vander, Petri Pasanen, Naldo, Clemens Fritz, Markus Rosenberg, Marko Marin, Mesut Özil, Aaron Hunt, Torsten Frings, Claudio Pizarro, Peter Niemeyer, Niklas Andersen, Per Mertesacker, Marcelo Moreno Martins, Philipp Bargfrede, Torsten Oehrl
