One team can create some space in the standings and the other will start getting nervous about advancing as Werder Bremen face off against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League Group L on Thursday 7:00 p.m. at Weser Stadium. Both teams won their first game in the group.
"Athletic are a very versatile team which really use the counter-attack. And this team has many technically advanced players who look for the challenge and often win them," said Werder Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf respectively about his opponents from Spain. "We have to take them seriously. They have a strong attack but our defence will be just fine," said Torsten Frings. The captain had to leave the final training session Wednesday afternoon but later gave the all-clear signal. "The foot got a little thick, but I will be fit again for the game," said Frings. Schaaf's team will definitely be missing Tim Borowski due to lingering back problems as well as Sebastian Boenisch, who is suffering from left thigh concerns. "Well, two other players will have to step up," said Schaaf.
The following players have been nominated for the Europa League game: Tim Wiese, Christian Vander, Petri Pasanen, Naldo, Clemens Fritz, Markus Rosenberg, Marko Marin, Mesut Özil, Aaron Hunt, Torsten Frings, Claudio Pizarro, Peter Niemeyer, Niklas Andersen, Per Mertesacker, Marcelo Moreno Martins, Philipp Bargfrede, Torsten Oehrl
