This was not the way Per Mertesacker wanted to celebrate his 25th birthday as the Werder defender was forced to leave Tuesday training after about an hour. The German international collided with a team-mate and received a cut above his right eye and had to be stitched up. "I don't think it will slow him down so much that he cannot train tomorrow," said head coach Thomas Schaaf Tuesday night.

Training without Borowski and Boenisch

Tim Borowski meanwhile could not even take part in the training session because of back pain. "I had problems after the game against Mainz and pain after training yesterday," said Borowski. It remains unclear if the midfielder will be available for the Europa League game against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, 1 October 2009 at 7 p.m. "I really cannot say that now. I have to wait until the diagnosis," said "Boro" on Tuesday.

Also a question mark is Sebastian Boenisch, who also missed Tuesday's training after taking a knock on his thigh a day earlier. Clemens Fritz however did return to team training after getting over his back problems. And there is more good news about the long-term injuries to Hugo Almeida and Sebastian Prödl. The Portuguese striker completed an individual session on the bike. And Prödl returned to Bremen after his knee surgery last Friday in Donaustauf to start his rehab. "It has gotten better. But of course it's not good yet. I am busy doing therapy so that the knee can take pressure so that I can play again. I don't have pain any more but there are still some problems running," said the Austrian international.
