Werder Bremen right back Clemens Fritz was unable to take part in the first team training of the week after being subbed out due to injury during the team's 3-0 Bundesliga victory over Mainz. "I had strong pain in my back after an unlucky fall, I pinched a nerve. But it's a lot better already. I want to train with the team tomorrow," said the 28-year-old, who was able to complete a light running drill on Monday.
Sebastian Boenisch meanwhile left the training grounds on Monday with a slight limp. "I got hit just above my left knee right at the beginning of training. But I fought through it and kept training," said the left back, who assumes he can play against Athletic Bilbao. There is also positive news about Mesut Özil. "At the moment it appears as though he will be back against Bilbao," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. Parallel to the team training, three players - Markus Rosenberg, Marcelo Moreno Martins and Daniel Jensen - went through individual workouts including sprint drills. "These specific things have been missing a bit. So we are making up for that," said Schaaf about the reason for the special workouts.
