Werder Bremen will face off against second division side Kaiserslautern in the German Cup Round of 16 on 27/28 October 2009 in Weser Stadium. That was the result was Sunday night’s draw. There should be plenty of excitement expected in Weser Stadium as the Green-Whites needed penalties in the last two home Cup showdowns against the Red Devils before advancing to the next round (6-5 on 9 February 1994 and 6-5 on 12 October 1999). The last match-up between the teams in the German Cup came on 4 March 2003 in the semi-final at the Betzenberg, where Werder were beaten easily 3-0. A note of interest: Andreas Reinke and Tim Wiese were Kaiserlautern’s goalkeepers in the last two cup encounters – both of whom later transferred to Werder. In addition, the coaches in the 1999 match were Thomas Schaaf and Otto Rehhagel.
