Werder Bremen needed nearly 40 minutes to get rolling against a very disciplined Mainz team. And then it was Aaron Hunt who after some fine passing down the right side sent Bremen on their way to their third Bundesliga victory of the season. "In the first half we really couldn’t find the right means, which made it that much more important for us to score a goal before halftime. Mainz had to open up a bit more in the second half and we used that and moved the ball around," said Hunt, whose team in the end easily bagged three points after initial difficulties.
"That was not so easy today. Mainz stood very compact and did not let us do very much. But we had the necessary patience. When you have the lead and more confidence behind you, you can play much better. We then showed quite a few good things and our goals were very well executed. Of course I am very satisfied with the final result. But I was not happy with losing so many easy balls. We didn’t need that," said Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf.
Striker and two-goal scorer Claudio Pizarro was also very satisfied with the team’s concentrated performance in defence. "I think it was important that we again did not allow a goal. That makes it easier to play attack," said Pizarro. And defender Naldo was also happy his defence kept a clean sheet again while also praising the offensive department, saying: "I had a chance for a goal again today but unfortunately it didn’t work out. But Claudio played super today."
