Werder Bremen beat Mainz 3-0 in their home match on the seventh game day of the season. Thomas Schaaf’s team was stronger than the promoted side with Aaron Hunt scoring the first goal and Claudio Pizarro hitting for two goals. The game was a struggle early on with the guests from Mainz working hard to hold their own against Werder, making things difficult for Bremen. But Aaron Hunt gave Schaaf’s team the lead in the 37th minute, benefitting from some nice passing by Philipp Bargfrede, who fed Hunt the ball from five yards out for the 1-0 lead at the break.
Werder still couldn’t take over the game in the early stretches of the second half, needing to wait until the 71st minute for the next goal. Petri Pasanen sent a high cross into the box where Claudio Pizarro’s header more or less decided the game. Bremen then dominated the match and increased the advantage to 3-0 with eight minutes to play. Again it was a header by Pizarro – this time after a cross from Sebastian Boenisch. That finished off Mainz and gave Werder three important points.
