Werder Bremen can announce a very special acquisition - the Green-Whites will be supporting the young Kenyan Doreen Nabwire Omondi for one year starting immediately. The 22-year-old from Nairobi-Kariobangi will add to the team in the Social Management department as an ambassador from her local organisation MYSA (Mathare Youth Sports Association), supplying her long-time experience of social work in the slums of Nairobi. "Doreen has an unbelievable CV for someone her age. We are certain that she will enrich our work. On the one hand, she can support our projects Werder World Wide and SCORT and gain helpful experience. But she can also serve as an invaluable contact person and consultant in topics such as anti-discrimination and civil courage, looking at these areas from a very extreme point of view," said Werder manager Klaus-Dieter Fischer. The Bremen management knows that the young African remained socially active despite the unrest of recent years in her homeland.

Raised in the slums of Nairobi, Nabwire kicked around cans and rag balls between sheet metal houses and wooden huts, learning to get by on her own. A very talented footballer, she was one of the best players in her country and also participated in the 1st Street Football World Championship in Berlin, winning the title with her MYSA team. FIFA found out about her through her combination of honours as best player and best scorer at international tournaments and her extraordinary social commitment. The world football body invited her to South Africa to take part in the qualification group draw for the 2010 World Cup along with football greats like Franz Beckenbauer.

With Werder, Doreen Nabwire Omondi's big dream of playing football in Europe will also come true. Werder Supervisory Board Chairman Willi Lemke first made contact to the 22-year-old at a UN conference in Nairobi. "When I heard about this woman, I definitely wanted to meet her. And the first contact impressed me very much. It was clear right away that Werder was exactly the right location for her to incorporate her story, her experiences and her personality and continue to develop herself," said Lemke. "We are very much looking forward to her first appearance in a game. You can see the excitement in her to have the chance to play organised football again after that was not possible for more than a year due to the unrest in Kenya," said Brite Brüggemann, head of the club's women's football project. Doreen Nabwire Omondi can add a German capital to her personal football fairy tale starting on Sunday, 27 September 2009 at 2 p.m. in the game against Hamburg at the Platz 12 grounds of Weser Stadium.
