Werder Bremen won their German Cup second round home match against FC St. Pauli 2-1 in dominating fashion, moving into the Round of 16 of the competition. The title defenders were satisfied with their performance especially in the first 45 minutes. "In the first half we played with so much pressure and developed quite a few good chances," said Clemens Fritz. Midfielder Tim Borowski said his team was "clearly the stronger team" until the 1-1 equaliser.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf would have gladly done without the increasing excitement after St. Pauli made it 1-1. "I would have rather had it a bit quieter. We were the stronger team over long stretches. In the first half we hardly gave up anything at all. St. Pauli were able to get back into the game after about 60 minutes. But other than the goal and a couple of other good chances we really didn't give them too much. It would have been important to have scored the second, third or fourth goal earlier. We developed some chances but did not use them. We weren't going after them energetically enough," said the coach.

Captain Torsten Frings said the team's strenuous recent schedule was also a factor. "The longer the game went the more tired we got. We have ourselves to blame for that. We were dominating the game and should have decided it earlier. But after the 1-1 we got ourselves back together and won deservedly," said Frings. Aaron Hunt, who scored the 1-0 goal, added: "Of course I am happy that I finally scored. It was about time. And I am happy that we reached the next round."
