Defending champions Werder Bremen held off FC St. Pauli 2-1 in the second round of the German Cup to move into the Round of 16. Werder’s goals at home in Weser Stadium were scored by Aaron Hunt and Naldo.

Thomas Schaaf’s team had struggles early on with the defensive minded second division club and could not take control of the game right away. Werder finally began putting pressure up front after around 20 minutes and would eventually grab the lead. Moreno Martins’ pass fell at the feet somewhat luckily of Aaron Hunt in the 28th minute and he didn’t waste the chance, hitting home from seven yards out.

Bremen dominated the rest of the first half though Markus Rosenberg, Hunt and Martins all missed opportunities to double the advantage as Werder led 1-0 at intermission. In the second half, St. Pauli scrapped their defensive tactics and tried to push forward, giving Werder counter-attack chances. But Rosenberg struck the right upright from 16 yards in the 55th minute. And Hunt’s rebound shot was fended away excellently by St. Pauli’s keeper.

The second division club equalised surprisingly after 75 minutes on a counter-attack. Marius Ebbers blasted a bicycle kick against the upright and Charles Takyi rebounded home against a helpless Werder keeper Tim Wiese. But Naldo scored the winning goal for Werder in the 82nd minute. Per Mertesacker fed the Brazilian, who headed home the 2-1 goal from five yards for Thomas Schaaf’s team.
