Werder Bremen will be without playmaker Mesut Özil for their German Cup second round match against FC St. Pauli on Wednesday 23 September 2009 at 7 p.m. "He will not play," said head coach Thomas Schaaf at a press conference ahead of the home game. The German international is still labouring with knee problems. Not yet on the roster is midfielder Daniel Jensen, who has only completed three training sessions with the team after missing six months with an injury Instead, attacker Torsten Oehrl has been nominated.

Three Werder players on the squad for Wednesday’s game have German Cup experience against FC St. Pauli. Naldo, Tim Borowski and Torsten Frings were all on hand for Bremen’s 3-1 loss in January 2006 in the Round of 16. The current Werder captain Frings remembers the game being played in snow and ice at Millerntor stadium. "That was a tough game. The conditions were irregular. Even during warm-ups we kept slipping and falling. But that was years ago. Tomorrow we have a new round and a new game. We don’t have anything to make good against St. Pauli. We just want to reach the next round and play how we want to play," said Frings after Tuesday’s final training.

"That was a game that will remain in your memories because of the horrible playing conditions," recalled Tim Borowski about Werder’s last game as a Bundesliga side against St. Pauli. "But then again, it’s so long ago that you nearly forget about it. Tomorrow we will be expecting a very good team, which will play fine football. This will be a tough game. We are expecting a heated cup fight. But we are the favourites and will be successful if we play concentrated and rely on our strengths," added Borowski.

The following players are in the roster for the German Cup match against FC St. Pauli: Wiese, Vander, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Borowski, Fritz, Rosenberg, Marin, Hunt, Frings, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Mertesacker, Moreno Martins, Bargfrede, Oehrl
