The final training ahead of Sunday’s game against Bayer Leverkusen (20 September 5:30 p.m.) also turned out to be the Werder players’ first training since returning from Funchal. Head coach Thomas Schaaf has hardly made any changes to the team from Thursday’s Europa League match on Thursday. Midfielder Mesut Özil continues to labour with a knee problem and will miss the game against Leverkusen. There was good news for Schaaf as midfielder Daniel Jensen returned to training after being out injured for more than five months. "It was good. I wasn’t scared at all that something could happen again. I didn’t even think about that during training," said the Danish international about his recovery from Achilles tendon problems.

But an appearance in Leverkusen would come too early for Jensen. "Daniel trained for the first time with the team after doing a lot of rehab work. The last test showed that there are still differences, which are understandable. But he has to continue an extra program. It is important that he make all the movements, change speeds and work himself into the team game," said Schaaf on Saturday.

The Werder coach has nominated the following 16 players for the game at BayArena: Wiese, Vander, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Borowski, Fritz, Rosenberg, Marin, Hunt, Frings, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Mertesacker, Moreno Martins, Bargfrede
