Werder Bremen midfielder Mesut Özil had to leave his first team training of the week early. The 20-year-old had to leave the training grounds after somewhat more than half an hour and said: "I have pain in my knee." Head coach Thomas Schaaf also was without any more details shortly after the Tuesday session. "He had knee problems. We have heard that he has been fighting it for a while now, even while he was at the (German) national team. We will see if he can go or not. We hope of course that he gets it under wraps. But he will fly with us," said Schaaf, looking ahead to the opening Europa League game at CD Nacional Funchal.

Otherwise, no other players who trained last week missed the first complete training session of the week due to injuries. Not on hand was Marko Futacs, who is with the Hungarian U20 national team in Telki preparing for the World Cup in Egypt. Also missing were Torsten Oehrl and Niklas Andersen, who were with Werder’s U23 team facing Kickers Offenbach in the evening (starting at 7 p.m. in Platz 11 Stadium).

For the first time this season, Werder’s Swedish international Markus Rosenberg will be in the roster after a three-month rehab from injury. And Rosenberg is not demanding to return to the starting line-up. "I am happy to finally be back. But of course I am not back to 100 percent fitness. One week of training is not enough for that," said the 26-year-old striker.

Werder Bremen is travelling to Funchal with the following 17 players: Wiese, Vander, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Borowski, Fritz, Rosenberg, Marin, Özil, Hunt, Frings, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Mertesacker, Moreno Martins, Bargfrede
