The national team weeks are over with and Europe’s professional leagues returned to action last weekend. Werder’s UEFA Europa League teams also took the pitch – though with poor showings. National Funchal – the Green-Whites’ Portuguese opponents on Thursday – failed in their dress rehearsal with a 2-0 away loss at Rio Ave Vila do Conde.
National Funchal and Austria Wien slumping
With just two points from the first four games this season Funchal have fallen to the lower ranks of the table, slumping in 13th place and desperately in the need of a boost to move up the standings. Things were not any better for Austria Wien, who lost 2-1 on the weekend at last placed and previously winless Austria Kärnten. With the loss, Austria Wien handed second place to Sturm Graz. Atletic Bilbao meanwhile have come up with a fairy tale start to the Spanish Primera Division. Bilbao beat Deportivo Xerez 1-0 for their consecutive 1-0 victory, pushing Atletic to fourth place on the table.
