The "smaller" North Derby ended up with a smaller point total for Werder Bremen as they had to accept a 0-0 draw at home against Hanover. Despite dominating the game for much of the game, the Green-Whites were unable to take advantage of their high level goal chances. Hanover proved to be a tough defending team with goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz being too much to overcome.

Thomas Schaaf’s team struggled mainly in the first half against Hanover. They were unable to find an offensive rhythm against the attentive and aggressive Hanover defence. The guests played at an equal level and even had some top chances on the counter-attack.

It was clear at intermission that Werder had to do more to bag their third consecutive Bundesliga victory and establish themselves among the leaders on the table. And Bremen did do more. Just seconds after the re-start Werder nearly scored the opening goal. Mesut Özil sent a corner into the box where Per Mertesacker rose high to head to the lower left corner of the goal but Steven Cherundolo was there to clear the dangerous situation. Tim Borowski and Marko Marin also missed chances over the course of the second half, and the contest ended in a 0-0 draw.
