The German national team won their World Cup 2010 World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan 4-0. Werder Bremen players Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil both were in the starting line-up and played the full 90 minutes. After Michael Ballack (14’) and Miroslav Klose (55’) gave the Germans a 2-0 lead, Özil set up Klose for the 3-0 lead in the 66th minute as well as Lukas Podolski in the 71st. Bremen’s third player on the German roster, Marko Marin, did not play against Azerbaijan, unlike in Germany’s friendly against South Africa.
Second placed Russia won their away match against Wales 3-1 in Cardiff. Germany and Russia face off on 10 October in Moscow in the top showdown in the Group 4. Ahead of the game, Germany lead with 22 points while Russia trail with 21 points. The third placed team Finland (14 points), who will play Germany in the final qualifier, gave up their slight chance at second place with a 1-1 draw against Liechtenstein.
