Some 29,500 tickets had been sold by Tuesday afternoon for Germany’s World Cup 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan. Three Werder players – Per Mertesacker, Mesut Özil and Marko Marin – will be playing for Germany. And in an attempt to bring in more fans to the AWD Arena, Mertesacker is drumming up support for ticket sales for the game in his hometown of Hanover. "I hope that a lot of people will come cheer us on in this very important qualification game. And I am sure that the ticket sales will heat up. With me coming back to my hometown there are always more than 20 more tickets sold. But I will do my best to make sure the stadium is more full," said Mertesacker. "I have called all the people here who have been important for me over the years and I am happy that there has been so much interest from them and that they will be watching the game."
Mertesacker, who missed last weekend’s test match against South Africa, was a much sought-after interview partner at the official German Football Federation press conference ahead of Germany’s third-to-final World Cup qualifying game in Group 4. "Due to the many games and travel over the past couple weeks I had a lot of stress. But now I am fit for the game," said the 24-year-old Mertesacker. "With Mesut Özil, we have the possibility of changing the style of the game. He can play in the midfield and also be put in the attack. I do not want to set my system just yet. I will wait for my final training," said the German national team coach Joachim Löw.
