Werder Bremen fans who wanted to read about Mesut Özil in the newspaper on Monday morning needed plenty of extra time. The German press was full of praise about the U21 European champion’s debut in the starting line-up for the German senior national team in their 2-0 victory over South Africa. Mesut Özil was topic number one in all sport sections in Germany.
Even head coach Thomas Schaaf had to work his way through more than the odd article about his young playmaker. But Schaaf did not want to add to the already flaming wave of euphoria. "That was all not a big surprise for us. You could see the development over the last few months," said Schaaf. But the coach will not change his behaviour in dealing with Özil in light of the new hype. "Until now he has dealt very well with the situation. And I am not worried about it at all as long as the reporting remains reasonable. The headlines are in order if they are backed with this kind of performance," said the Bremen coach after his team’s afternoon training.
In regards to personnel, there were no big changes in the first training sessions of the week. The slightly banged up Jurica Vranjes has returned but Dusko Tosic missed Monday’s training. "I had back problems and slight problems with my left groin. But that is gone. I am fine again," said Vranjes. Defender Tosic however may be forced to take a longer break. "He was given time off for private reasons," said Schaaf in the afternoon.
