With Werder coach Thomas Schaaf on his way to Nyon for the UEFA coaching forum, his coaching staff of Wolfgang Rolff, Matthias Hönerbach and Michael Kraft took over Thursday’s practice session. But the Werder players could hardly take a break with a tough, nearly one-hour circle training planned before Frings, Pizarro and Co. played a relaxing game of football tennis.
Back at training was Bremen keeper Tim Wiese. "Tim could take part as normal and is now fully back in regular training," said assistant coach Wolfgang Rolff. Markus Rosenberg (knee problem) was able to participate in strength drills but it is unclear when he can return to full team training. There is better news from the German national team camp where Werder midfielder Mesut Özil was back in German training on Thursday. "I practiced again already yesterday afternoon and it looks good. I don’t see any problem for the weekend," said Özil, who is the top scorer in the Bundesliga. Özil and Germany have international matches coming up against South Africa and Azerbaijan.
Besides the six internationals on national team duty, also missing from training Thursday were Daniel Jensen (Achilles tendon), Sebastian Prödl (knee), Hugo Almeida (tendon inflammation and appendix surgery), Naldo (foot) and Jurica Vranjes. The Croatian needed a break due to back pain and was treated by Werder team physician Dr. Götz Dimanski.
