Werder striker Hugo Almeida is recovering after undergoing successful appendix surgery Wednesday afternoon. "Hugo was complaining about gastrointestinal discomfort on Tuesday. We had him checked out in the Bremen-Mitte Clinic. And the operation went well," said Werder Bremen team doctor Dr. Götz Dimanski on Thursday. Almeida must remain in the hospital until the weekend.
The Portuguese international had already missed 10 days with plantar tendon inflammation in his right foot. "Hugo Almeida will not be set back by the appendix surgery. He would have missed more time with the foot injury," said Dimanski. The cast is scheduled to come off next week, after which he will begin his rehab work. It is too early to determine when Almeida will be ready to play again.
