Werder’s summer signing Marko Marin took up a more attacking position in the away game at Hertha BSC on Sunday and shone in his new role. The German 'Under 21' international was provider for two Werder goals at the Olympia Stadium: "That was an unusual position for me but it worked out very well," said Marko Marin after the 3-2 win in Berlin.
Thomas Schaaf was in agreement with his offensive all-rounder and commented: "He played fantastically." Werder’s general manager Klaus Allofs added: "Marko Marin was involved in two goals today and that’s further proof that his development is headed in the right direction. The fact that he played as a striker today confirms the flexibility that we have with our players." But Marko Marin wasn’t the only player to notch up two scorer points. Once again Mesut Özil was provider and got his own name on the score-sheet too: "Marko Marin’s integration in our game is improving all the time and Mesut Özil has had a fantastic season so far – he’s a very important player for us," said Tim Borowski, who made it 2-0 for Werder intermittently.
The only real downer on the day for Werder was the injury to and subsequent substitution of goalkeeper Tim Wiese in the 61st minute of the game: "He suffered a bruised calf – it’s just as well that we have a break for now," remarked Thomas Schaaf, who gave his men a day off on Monday.
