Werder Bremen continued their strong run in the Bundesliga by beating Hertha Berlin 3-2 on the road with Mesut Özil, Tim Borowski uad Naldo scoring the goals.
The first chance of the game came just 10 minutes in as Bremen keeper Tim Wiese stopped Maximilian Nicu’s blast from 14 meters in front of 38,000 spectators in Berlin. At the other end, the agile Marko Marin tried a long distance shot but was stopped by Hertha keeper Jaroslav Drobny.
Werder eventually took a slight advantage of play and had another scoring opportunity just after the half-hour mark. Marin again was in the spotlight in the 34th minute, dancing through the Berlin defence only to be denied by Drobny again, sending the game into intermission even at 0-0.
Bremen finally turned their domination of play into goals in the second half. Mesut Özil collected a fine pass from Marin and converted to make it 1-0 after 57 minutes. Four minutes later, Werder keeper Wiese had to leave the game injured with Christian Vander entering the contest. Marin set up his second goal of the game in the 74th minute with Tim Borowski hitting home Marin’s cross for a 2-0 lead.
Hertha found their way back into the match and cut the lead in half with 13 minutes left through Lukasz Pisczek. Naldo re-established the two-goal lead 3-1 after a fine assist from Özil with seven minutes remaining. But Hertha kept things interesting late, again cutting the lead to one with Patrick Ebert’s goal in the 90th minute. Werder, however, held on for three important away points.
