Just three days after their long trip to FK Aktobe, the fourth match day in the Bundesliga season sees Werder Bremen travel to Hertha BSC Berlin, where they will play on Sunday, 30.08.09 (kick-off 3:30pm).
'The Old-Lady', as Hertha are affectionately known, finished last season in fourth place in the league, proving particularly strong at home throughout the campaign. Trainer Lucien Favre’s men beat Bröndby Copenhagen 3-1 in the return leg of their qualifier on Thursday night to book their place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. "Of course that’s a taste of success and that will do wonders for their self-confidence," noted Thomas Schaaf, and he continued: "It doesn’t change anything for us though."
Thomas Schaaf will of course have his side’s positive record against Hertha in the back of his mind. Werder only lost one of the last six meetings between the two clubs and won all five of the others. During the summer such important players as Josip Simunic, Marko Pantellic and Andrej Voronin all left the club from the capital: "They have lost players who were very important to the team during last season and that’s something that is not easy to compensate," remarked the Werder trainer: "The team will pull together more now though to work as a collective unit and battle for one another." On the transfer market, Berlin re-signed a familiar character in Artur Wichniarek from Armenia Bielefeld, but thus far the front man has failed to impress and on Sunday Favre will also be without Raffael due to injury: "It certainly won’t be an easy game for us on Sunday," warned Werder coach Thomas Schaaf.
The following group of players have made the trip to Berlin and make up the squad for the game: Wiese, Vander, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Borowski, Fritz, Marin, Özil, Hunt, Frings, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Mertesacker, Moreno, Bargfrede
