Werder Bremen reached the Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League by beating FK Aktobe 8-3 on aggregate following their 2-0 win in the return road leg against the Kazakhstan club.
Knowing they needed to make up a three-goal deficit after the 6-3 first leg loss at Weser-Stadion, Aktobe pressured Werder in the early going with the support of some 11,000 supporters. But Werder striker Claudio Pizarro shocked the hosts after 10 minutes, heading home a corner kick for the 1-0 lead. Emil Kenzhisariev was sent off in the 35th minute for his second warning and Pizarro struck again just before the half-time whistle, essentially deciding the game and the tie with the 2-0 lead at intermission.
Thomas Schaaf’s team continued to dominate in the second half as well. But Werder’s third goal would just not fall despite excellent chances from Marcelo Moreno, Marko Marin and Torsten Frings. The 6-3 victory in the first leg at home combined with the 2-0 win today moves Werder easily into the Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League.
