On Wednesday morning, the Werder crew gathered at Bremen Airport before heading for Aktobe. Offensive-all-rounder Aaron Hunt, who was forced to rest earlier in the week through injury, was back amongst his team mates again: "Aaron was involved in the final training session. We have nothing to be concerned about," explained head coach Thomas Schaaf.

On the subject of the opponent, Claudio Pizarro explained: "They proved that they know what to do with the ball. We possess more quality but we want to score an early goal to be absolutely sure." Aaron Hunt stated: "We have no intention of taking it easy, the result from the first leg puts us in a good position but they have already proven that they are capable of scoring three goals and this time they’ll have their own fans behind them." Striker Torsten Oehrl, who has been called into the squad to replace the injured Hugo Almeida is also well aware of what’s to be done: "This is a competitive trip and we are going with a clear goal: We want to progress! We are not about to be lead into a false sense of security by the advantage we have. Aktobe won 6-1 in their last game." General manager Klaus Allofs added: "We have an advantage but it would be wrong to consider that a safe cushion. You can rest on a safe cushion and that’s something we don’t intend to do. We want to win."

The following 18 man squad has made the trip to Kazakhstan:

Wiese, Vander, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Borowski, Fritz, Marin, Özil, Hunt, Frings, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Andersen, Mertesacker, Moreno, Bargfrede, Oehrl
