Werder Bremen once again won a home tie with a three goal difference, but on this occasion, on Sunday evening, the mood was very different to that following the 6-3 Europa-League-Play-Off in midweek against Aktobe. Whilst during the week, the lack of concentration in the defence clouded the success on the night there was a much more satisfied feeling within the ranks following the 3-0 win over Gladbach: "We were very disciplined," explained contented Werder coach Thomas Schaaf.
General manager Klaus Allofs commented: "When you keep a clean sheet at the back and score three at the other end then you have to be satisfied. It was clear to see just how much potential this team possesses, but we are still a long way from being a well oiled machine. We are headed in the right direction but we need to continue with our development," said Allofs after the first Bundesliga win of the new season.
Torsten Frings was equally positive following the 3-0 win against Gladbach: "It was clear to see that we had undertaken a great deal. We didn’t want to take any risks and give the ball away too cheaply. On the whole, we’ve taken a big step forward." And Tim Borowski added: "The result mirrors the run of play very well and the clarity of the score-line is ok too. With a bit of luck we could have scored one or two more."
