Werder Bremen won their home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 at Weser-Stadion. Claudio Pizarro, recently acquired from Chelsea, scored twice (21’/38’) and Naldo added a late goal in the 88th minute.
Werder Bremen secured their first victory of the season by beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 in front of 33,000 spectators at Weser-Stadion. Newly acquired Claudio Pizarro tallied twice in the first half (21st and 38th minutes) and Naldo made it 3-0 late (88th) for Thomas Schaaf’s team.
Pizarro’s first goal of the season came after 21 minutes of play after a third dangerous free kick by Mesut Özil. Gladbach keeper Christofer Heimeroth could not corral the German international playmaker’s free kick and Pizarro cleaned up the loose ball. The Peruvian striker doubled his total in the 38th minute, heeling home a spectacular shot after a ball into the box by Clemens Fritz. Werder went into intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Gladbach did not really endanger Werder in the second half as Bremen controlled the match. Marko Marin nearly increased the lead to 3-0 against his old team after 59 minutes but Heimeroth made a fine save on his shot from 14 yards. Heimeroth could not, however, stop Naldo with two minutes left as the Brazilian headed up the third goal as the Green-Whites earned a deserved 3-0 victory.
