No Green-White supporters look back fondly on last season’s encounters between Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Werder were handed their first loss of the season with a 3-2 defeat at Borussia Park and then played to a 1-1 draw at home. The match at home left Bremen supporters particularly in doubt as head coach Thomas Schaaf’s men out-shot Gladbach 35-6 and had a 19-2 advantage on corners. But Werder Bremen have the chance to make good on Sunday, 23 August 2009 as part of the third game day, welcoming Gladbach to Weser-Stadion at 5:30 p.m.
But Mönchengladbach head northwards having collected four points from their first two matches, a fact that somewhat worries Schaaf. "Gladbach have started very well out of the blocks, and if I think about the game against Bochum, they could have had even more," said Schaaf. "It will not be an easy task. Gladbach have no pressure here and that gives them an extra strength. We have to make sure they don’t get too comfortable."
The game against Gladbach will be a special one for one Werder player, as Marko Marin will face off against many of his old teammates from last season. And Bremen’s off-season acquisition is looking forward to the meeting. "Of course it’s special for me to play against the club where I became a professional. I know all the people at the club and am happy to see the old teammates this early in the season again," said Marin.
