In spite of a rather comfortable three goal cushion, following the 6-3 win over FC Aktobe, Werder’s representatives were not completely satisfied with the game against the side from Kazakhstan. General manager Klaus Allofs explained after the match at the Weser Stadium: "We will have to be highly concentrated and extremely determined in the return leg next week. We cannot afford any carelessness," said Allofs.
Regardless of the advantage his side have, head coach Thomas Schaaf also made it clear that he will not be sending a "B-Team" on the trip to Aktobe: "Every game carries its own dangers. In the return leg I hope to see my team play better than they did tonight. The manner in which we conceded the goals here leaves a lot of room for improvement." Double goal-scorer Naldo was very satisfied with his attacking success, but not quite so happy about the end result: "Hopefully we can manage to keep a clean sheet again in the next game. This tie is a long way from over. They scored three goals tonight and if we are not totally concentrated next week, that could happen again," warned the Brazilian. Claudio Pizarro is also expecting a win in the return leg: "We must improve! If we had played last year against teams like Milan that way we played tonight, we would have conceded more than three goals."
The Peruvian striker didn’t manage to get his name on the score-sheet in his first game back as a Werder player, and he commented: "I’m working on making sure that happens at the weekend," said Pizarro, who, as the rest of the team, has already turned his attention to the task at hand in the Bundesliga – where an improved team performance against Monchengladbach will be absolutely necessary: "We will have to be wary now of Gladbach, they are currently riding on a little wave of success and have made a good start by their standards," warned Tim Borowski.
