Boubacar Sanogo is leaving Werder Bremen and transferring to French Ligue 1 side AS St. Étienne. Neither club released details about the move. "The French have been very interested in acquiring Boubacar Sanogo for a long time. After Claudio Pizarro came to us on Tuesday we were able to work out the transfer. All formalities have been taken care of. We would like to thank Bouba for his performance with Werder Bremen and wish him lots of goals and success in St. Étienne," said Werder manager Klaus Allofs on Thursday.
The Ivory Coast native played in his 100th Bundesliga match last weekend in Munich. The striker moved to Kaiserslautern in summer 2005 as scoring champion with Saudi Arabian club Al Ain. Sanogo transferred one year later to Hamburg, from where he came to Werder in summer 2007. After a strong start he played at the African Cup of Nations in early 2008 and never regained his form. In the second half of last season he was loaned to Hoffenheim. That meant he did not face his future team-mates from St. Étienne in Werder’s UEFA Cup Round of 16 showdown in March 2009.
After returning to Bremen, Sanogo was one of the top surprises of the 2009-10 season preparations and scored three times in his first two games. All told, the Ivory Coast native scored 26 goals in 100 Bundesliga games. He tallied 11 times in 30 matches for Werder Bremen.
