Even though the school summer holidays have passed in Bremen, there is a huge rush to the Weser-Stadion training grounds. And it’s no wonder since newly acquired Claudio Pizarro was being presented to Werder fans for the first time at Tuesday’s team training.
The Peruvian international striker returns back from FC Chelsea nearly exactly one year after first being loaned from the English club to Bremen for last season. Pizarro went back to London for the beginning of the 2009-10 season preparations before arriving back in northern Germany on Monday evening. Werder fans welcomed the German Cup winner as if he had never left and his new/old team-mates were happy to have him back as well.
Team captain Torsten Frings was just starting to miss his old colleague. "Of course we are happy. We all waited a long time for him to come to us." Clemens Fritz said: "That is very good news. Everyone here is happy!" And Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese added: "Claudio is very important for us. He fits well into the team and proved last year what he’s capable of doing."
Werder playmaker Mesut Özil, who set up a number of Pizarro’s goals last season, also had only words of praise for the acquisition. "We already showed in Munich our big potential even before the signing. But Claudio strengthening us makes us all happy. He is an ice-cold goal scorer with special skills," said Özil.
