Werder Bremen won the Citibank friendly tournament in Stahnsdorf near Berlin. In the 45-minute final, the Green-Whites beat fifth-division side Hermsdorf 3-1 in penalties in 34 degree heat in the shade. Bremen reached the final by blasting past tournament hosts Eintracht Stahnsdorf with an impressive 7-0 victory. Some 4,500 spectators watched the tournament with the German Cup winners.
The final started with a blast. Werder were hardly on the pitch when Moritz Göhler finished an attack through Florian Venz and Christoph Röttgen to make it 1-0. The friendly then became a battle for Bremen, who tried to fight off the heat and a defence organised by Sascha Flemming. The cup winners finally equalised through a goal by Said Husejinovic just before the final whistle.
Penalties followed in which three players stepped up to the spot for each team. And the Green-Whites won impressively. Phillip Bargfrede and Petri Pasanen converted while Christian Vander stopped Michael Haubner’s shot and Ivan Bacak’s blast over the goal.
The Green-Whites spent some time after the game signing autographs and then travelled back home.
