Bayern Munich did not expect it, but one year after allowing Werder Bremen five goals in Allianz Arena the host side faced off against a Green-White defensive wall in the hot temperatures.
There was plenty of praise about the Green-Whites’ defensive showing. "We discussed our tactics intensively over the past couple days. And you could see that the team worked a lot better with one another than they did against Frankfurt. The order was a lot better. This was a step forward," said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf. Manager Klaus Allofs also was pleased with the improved security in front of the Bremen goal. "We played a good game, especially standing better in the back. But we also played a bit more courageous up front," said Allofs.
Defensive boss Per Mertesacker was also very satisfied with the backline’s work. "We absolutely wanted to make things difficult for them and that worked well. We can be proud of that," said Mertesacker. And goalkeeper Tim Wiese said he hopes the defence can maintain its high level. The German international keeper was one of the best players on the pitch, making a number of excellent saves. "I always try to give my best and that worked well today," said Wiese, who didn’t have a chance in the allowed goal. "That was a deflected cross at the near post. If I had reached that ball I wouldn’t be playing in the Bundesliga but instead on Mars."
