In addition to Werder Bremen’s German national team players who played to a 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan Wednesday night in their World Cup qualifier, three other internationals - Hugo Almeida, Petri Pasanen and Sebastian Prödl – were on senior team duty in international friendly matches. And Almeida probably had the best day of the bunch.
The 25-year-old Almeida scored two goals for Portugal in their 3-0 test match win over Liechtenstein in Vaduz. Things did not go so well for Petri Pasanen and his Finland team, who lost their friendly against Sweden 1-0 with Johan Elmander scoring in the 42nd minute. Good news for Werder fans was that Pasanen played the entire match in the interior defence next to Sami Hyypiä.
Sebastian Prödl and Austria lost 2-0 against Cameroon with the Bremen defender having no chance to stop either goal by Pierre Webó (28’/35’) since he was subbed in at half-time. Besides the senior sides, the German U21s also played at the Valeriy-Lobanovskyi tournament in Kiev, taking third place after beating Iran 1-0 on Änis Ben-Hatira’s late goal. Philipp Bargfrede was subbed on in the 68th minute while Marko Marin – who like his Bremen team-mate started the first game against Turkey – did not play against Iran.
