The German national team beat Azerbaijan 2-0 (1-0) in their seventh game in qualifying for next year’s World Cup. Werder’s Per Mertesacker was involved over the full 90 minutes. Mesut Özil, who was introduced as a substitute in the 84th minute, made his competitive debut in the "A" national team. There was no opportunity for Bremen’s other representative, goalkeeper Tim Wiese, to get involved for trainer Joachim Löw’s men on the day. The goals for the DFB selection were scored by Bastian Schweinsteiger (13’) and Miroslav Klose (54’), both from Werder’s up-coming Bundesliga opponents Bayern Munich.
The win saw Germany notch up their 19th point and extend their lead at the top of the Group 4, although they have played one game more than second place Russia. The next game in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will be the return game against Azerbaijan in Germany on 09.09.09.
